Before you transfer a domain to a new registrar, there is one important rule to be aware of. ICANN, the organization that oversees global domain name policy, enforces a 60-day lock period after every new registration or previous domain transfer. During this window, the domain cannot be moved to another registrar.

If your domain was registered or transferred within the last 60 days, you will need to wait until that period expires before initiating a new transfer. This policy exists to protect domain owners from unauthorized transfers and to reduce the risk of domain hijacking. It applies universally across all ICANN-accredited registrars, regardless of the TLD.

Every domain transfer requires an EPP code (also known as an authorization code or transfer key). This code acts as a password that proves you are the rightful owner of the domain and that you have authorized the move to a new registrar. Without a valid EPP code transfer, the process cannot begin.

To retrieve your code, log into your current registrar's control panel and navigate to the "Domain Management" or "Transfer" settings for the domain you want to move. Most registrars display the EPP code directly on this page, or provide a button to generate one. In some cases, the authorization code is emailed to the registrant email address on file rather than shown in the dashboard. Be sure that your contact email is up to date before requesting the code.

One of the most common concerns when you transfer a domain to a new registrar is whether your email will stop working. The short answer: it will not. A domain transfer only moves the registration record. It does not touch your DNS settings, MX records, or email hosting configuration. Your inbox continues to send and receive messages normally throughout the entire process.

Your MX records stay exactly the same unless you choose to change them. Whether you use Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or any other email provider, the transfer has no impact on mail delivery.
